PAFCAL's History and Development

Pafcal, an innovative soil-less growing medium, was developed over a decade by Suntory Midorie.


Spearheaded by Suntory’s Research Development Department, Pafcal’s creation involved crafting a lightweight, organic based solid foam that is a form of peat soil, optimized for a 70% air and 30% water balance for over 400 plant varieties to thrive.


The Suntory Midorie team engineered a durable, re-usable substrate that retains water uniformly, requires minimal maintenance, and supports applications like vertical green walls and indoor planting.


The Midorie greening project began in Japan in 2008. Pafcal’s clean, easy to maintain, eco-friendly composition, has transformed urban spaces across 10 countries, with Greenwalls covering over

50,000 m² of unique installations in South East Asia.
